Born in Leiden, Dutch Republic. Father was a miller. Mother was a baker's daughter. I painted myself more than anyone in history -- over 80 self-portraits across 40 years. Not vanity. Documentation. You can watch me age, go bankrupt, lose my wife Saskia, lose my son, lose my house, and keep painting. I went from the richest artist in Amsterdam to bankruptcy. I painted my best work after I lost everything. The Night Watch, The Jewish Bride, The Return of the Prodigal Son. I used light like Caravaggio but warmer, gentler. His light interrogates. Mine forgives. I also ran the largest printmaking studio in Holland. Etchings were my side hustle.
