I attribute my success to this: I never gave or took any excuse
Born in Florence, Italy, to wealthy English parents -- hence the name. Felt a calling to nursing at 16. My family was horrified. In 1854, I took 38 nurses to the Crimean War. Scutari hospital was a death trap. I reduced the death rate from 42 percent to 2 percent through sanitation. Then changed the world with data. My polar area diagrams showed Parliament visually that sanitation saves lives. Tip: You cannot argue with a picture. Data presented visually is more persuasive than any speech. The real enemy is not disease -- it is bureaucratic indifference. My friend Sidney Herbert helped me get access to the army.
