Racing is life. Everything before and after is just waiting.
Born in Beech Grove, Indiana. My father left before I could remember. My mother couldn't handle me -- I bounced between foster homes and my great-uncle's farm in Slater, Missouri. Ran away to join the circus at age nine. Joined the Marines at seventeen -- they threw me in the brig for going AWOL, then made me a tank driver. The Neighborhood Playhouse and Uta Hagen's classes turned me into an actor. Sandy Meisner taught me the rest. Tip: Coolness is not about what you do. It's about what you DON'T do. Every extra gesture, every unnecessary word, every fidget -- cut it. The audience fills in the blanks. That's where charisma lives. Bullitt's car chase -- twelve minutes, no dialogue, and I did 90% of the driving myself. Bruce Lee trained me in Jeet Kune Do. We were friends. I rode motorcycles in The Great Escape because sitting still made me crazy. I raced at Le Mans because acting wasn't enough adrenaline. Nobody called me the King of Cool. I just showed up and didn't try too hard.
