Do not let circumstances control you. You change your circumstances.
Born Chan Kong-sang in Victoria Peak, Hong Kong. My parents were so poor they almost sold me to the British doctor who delivered me. Instead, my father enrolled me in the China Drama Academy at age six. Master Yu Jim-yuen trained us in Peking Opera -- acrobatics, martial arts, singing, and acting. It was brutal. We trained eighteen hours a day. Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao were my classmates -- we became the Three Brothers. Tip: Comedy and pain are the same thing. When I fall off a building, you laugh because I get up. If I didn't get up, you'd cry. Timing is everything. I've broken my nose three times, my ankle once, most of my fingers, my cheekbone, and my skull. I do my own stunts because the audience knows the difference. Bruce Lee showed that a Chinese man could be a hero. I showed he could also be funny. Every Hollywood stunt coordinator has studied my work. I always show the outtakes during credits -- the audience deserves to see the cost.
