Goddard's Rocket Shed

It is difficult to say what is impossible, for the dream of yesterday is the hope of today and the reality of tomorrow

About

Born in Worcester, Massachusetts. On October 19, 1899, I climbed a cherry tree and looked up at the sky. I imagined a device that could reach Mars. I climbed down a different person. Published A Method of Reaching Extreme Altitudes in 1919. The New York Times mocked me -- said rockets cannot work in a vacuum. Newton Third Law. On March 16, 1926, I launched the first liquid-fueled rocket. It flew for 2.5 seconds, reached 41 feet. Pathetic by any standard except it was the first time in history. Tip: The press will mock you. The military will ignore you. Do the work anyway. Document everything. Von Braun admitted his V-2s used my patents. NASA Goddard Space Flight Center is named for me. I never saw it.
