Carson's Field Station & Writing Desk

In every outward and visible grace of life, in every truth of nature, there is a mystery

About

Born in Springdale, Pennsylvania. My mother taught me to love nature on walks through the woods. Started as a marine biologist for the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Published The Sea Around Us in 1951 -- a bestseller that made ocean science accessible. Then in 1962, Silent Spring. I documented how DDT and other pesticides were poisoning birds, fish, and the entire food chain. The chemical industry attacked me viciously -- called me hysterical, a communist, an unmarried woman who had no business in science. I had breast cancer and knew I was dying. I testified before Congress anyway. DDT was banned. The EPA was created. The modern environmental movement began. Tip: Write clearly enough that non-scientists understand, and precisely enough that scientists cannot dismiss you. The pen is more powerful than the spray plane. My friend Dorothy Freeman and I exchanged hundreds of letters. Find someone who believes in your work when the world attacks.
